From time to time, local Notices to Mariners relating, in general, to
matters which may affect navigation and safety within the
WARNING OF SUBMERGED OBSTRUCTIONS. Structures used for fishing may
be encountered at a number of locations in the River Severn. Whilst not hazardous
to commercial shipping, the potential to cause damage to small craft should
be recognised.
Chart 1166 (Avonmouth to Sharpness) shows the positions of wooden stakes adjacent
to the shoreline south of Oldbury Sands. A significant steel structure exists
at Aylburton Warth at 51deg 41'.50N 2 deg 33'.00W which should be avoided.
Other structures exist along the shoreline close to Awre (The Noose). Of particular
significance to surfers is the row of ten pairs of steel posts set into the
riverbed approximately 150m upstream of the 'White Hart' at Broadoak. These
posts are approximately 1m high and extend 30m from the shore. It should be
noted that they will be only just covered as the bore wave passes and therefore
have the potential to cause injury.
The texts of the current Notices are reproduced below. Copies may also be obtained from the Trustees' office at Sharpness, to which notification of navigational problems may also be made.
