NOTICE TO MARINERS NO. 5/10

RIVER SEVERN – SURVEY WORK AND

SCIENTIFIC BUOY-LAYING 

British Admiralty Chart 1166

Mariners are advised that from August 16th 2010 , weather permitting, 3 single point moorings and data-gathering buoys will be deployed in the vicinity of Oldbury Power Station on the River Severn. These moorings will be situated at Pillhouse Rocks, Chapel Rock and Sharpness (north of docks) in the following positions:

Pillhouse Rocks 51° 39’ 36” N 002° 36’ 51” W

Chapel Rock 51° 40’ 27” N 002° 33’ 42” W

Sharpness 51° 43’ 25” N 002° 29’ 25” W

The MV Riparian will deploy the buoys and moorings. The bouys are expected to be present for 15 days and will be marked by hard yellow IALA special marked buoys carrying radar reflectors and lights having the characteristic Gp Fl Y (5) 20s.

Thermal plume and current mapping is also scheduled to take place around this time using the MV Titan Voyager. The survey duration will be up to 6 hours a day for 4 days.

Streamline drogue releases and tracking from Oldbury Power Station outfall are expected to take place on the 19th and 25th August also using Titan Voyager.

Mariners should navigate with caution when in the vicinity of the trawl floats and as wide a berth as is practicable is requested (minimum 150m advised).
